The boards are quite heavily worn with rubbing to the surfaces and edges and some staining and discolouration. Light fraying at the top and bottom of the spine. Browning to page edges which are worn. Presentation copy with a Prize label from the Scottish Band of Hope Union (1934) to the front free endpaper - this was awarded to Robert Tait (my uncle) for an Essay on Temperance. There is browning to the endpapers with a small pencil drawing to the front pastedown and my father has written his name in pencil to the rear free endpaper. The pages are marked and stained in a number of places with a small tear to the edge of page 19 and a small piece torn from the top corner of page 173. Colour frontispiece by J. Phillips Paterson who also provided a number of black and white illustrations for the book. No jacket. Undated but believed to be a first edition.
