This begins with a history of Mexican exploration of the area, and continues with the career of Charles M. Weber, the discovery of gold, and gold mining, the development of mail service with Wells Fargo - and Black Bart's last holdup - and includes a final chapter on the bridges of the San Francisco Bay. Illustrated with 20 plates, including one folding map. Edited by James A. Metcalf with the Spanish terms, phrases and translations edited by Marie Aldazabal. INSCRIBED on the title page with the comment that this copy is one of 300 from the first run of the first printing, and dated in 1939. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This first edition is in very good condition but lacks the dust jacket as issued. The brown cloth cover is in bright condition with only a noticeable bump to the top right corner and several very small reddish specks on the lower spine to note as cover issues. The interior has one defect to note - one signature of four numbered pages has pulled free of the binding but is present and is in its proper location. There is a previous owners book plate in the front, otherwise, the interior is in all but fine condition. The authors' picture, opposite the title page, carries an inscription from the author dated December 4, 1938. This book offers a good general history of California's San Joaquin Valley beginning with the early exploration by the Spanish and moving into the Mexican period. The book has considerable information on the American period beginning with John Marsh and Charles Webber. The book contains twenty illustration with both sketches and photographs and the very nice folded map on page thirty-one is present and in fine condition. 316 pages. Inscribed by Author.…

Half of the free front endpaper has a very nice personalized inscription to the previous owner frpm the author, dated 1943. Otherwise book is a Tight sound unmarked copy in Very Good plus condition. Scarce dustjacket is present and in fair condition with front dustjackert flsp missing and large chip out of the base of the spine. The dustjacket has been placed in a Brodart protective cover by us to protect it and it looks much better than described. . This does not affect the dustjacket in any way, as all taping is done on the outside of the protector. No Signature.…

It is also an association copy, with a gift inscription & signature inside front cover by "Josephine.your State Treasurer & Friend,'' in memory of the recipient's "official visit to Court Valley's #818. October 1947." In 374 pages, with duotone photos throughout, this hardcover book has rich burgundy cloth over boards with bright gilt crest & lettering to front & spine. Condition is Near Fine, marred only by mild corner bumping. Else, very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages off-white with a hint of tanning around outer edges.
