The ceremony not only marks an important stage in the life cycle of the young novice and constitutes a culminating point in the life of the donors to the ceremony-usually, though not always, the parents of the novice-but it also provides an occasion for the fulfillment of an important community function. Part 1 describes the initiation procedures to enter the novicehood. Part 2 presents the higher ordination ceremony of Buddhist monks.
