Howell & Co…mpany, known as "The Hotel Menu House," was founded in 1883 in Elmira, New York by Fred M. Howell and John Aldrich. Starting out by producing wood and strawboard cigar and shoe boxes for other manufacturing companies, the business would branch out into also making labels, specialty wraps, and menus, the latter known for their beautiful, high-quality designs. The current ones all featured sample / inventory number (for ordering) and prices for bulk purchasing. The largest one, in fact, was intended as a classy menu cover and included pricing for "covers only, inserts, and silk colrd & tassel.".

Unpaginated, though ~ 20 pp. 10-2/8" x 7" "Railroad magnate Henry Villard financed the Portland Hotel and construction began in 1882, but his finances collapsedin part because of the Panic of 1884and the construction stopped for five years. With only the foundation completed, the site became known as "Villard's Rui…ns" and the bodies of two murder victims were found there before construction resumed. George B. Markle, Jr. began a campaign to raise local money to complete the hotel. He generated enough interest and subscribers to his plan, among them Henry W. Corbett, Henry Failing, Simeon Reed and William S. Ladd, to get construction started again. Later investors included labor leader Ed Boyce. The Queen Anne, Châteauesque hotel finally opened in 1890 and had eight floors and 326 bedrooms.It had cost well over a million dollars and eight years to complete." [wiki] The hotel closed in 1951 and all the furniture was sold at auction. Soiling wrappers (upper wrapper with possible water damage?), tie a bit frayed and sunned, some red and black ink markings - adjusting and adding menu items, light soiling to some leaves as well as some faint age toning to edges. Overall, a VG copy. White card stock wrappers, embossed upper wrappers with gilt, textured white leaves, with categorical tabs, printed in red and black, held together by a red cord tie and stapled, now housed in a clear archival mylar sleeve.

Thomas, Esq. given by the Law and City Courts Committee of the Corporation of the City of London; the layout of the seating & names given within.…The plan is in the form of a tri-fold, legal docket, approx. 4" x 9". With two postcards from the hotel, one undivided back and postally unused, with the menu printed on the front from the 17th July, 1904; and another, circa 1912, divided back and sent to Belgium, front with an illustration of the hotel's facade and the reverse with a list of amenities. Also, a circa 1915 promotional booklet for the venue, 20 pages; illustrated throughout with interiors of accommodations, dining and relaxation areas and with listings of sample menus and tariffs. A little wear; in very good condition.
