Hardcover. Condition: Very good-. First Edition. Large octavo, 2 volumes, plus atlas. About very good in (the publisher's?) 3/4 red morocco and red pebbled cloth. Wear to the extremities of the binding, and some discoloration to the endpapers, but internally clean, fresh and sound. The atlas volume is complete, and the maps are all very bright and clean with zero foxing, though, as often, the three largest maps have stress tears along the hinged edges, and some mis-folded seams, with attendant closed tears/holes; the worst of this is to the very last map (no. 22). The first volume bears the ownership signature of W[ilbur]. F. Hinman, a native of Berea, OH (near Cleveland), and an officer in the 65th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, who was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga on 9/19/1863, but recovered, ultimately being promoted to Captain of Company F in June, 1864. There are a small handful of his annotations within, though nothing of major consequence. The ownership stamp of another resident of Berea is present on the paste-down of the atlas volume, and both volumes also have a 20th century Civil War-themed bookplate. Broadfoot notes that this set, especially the atlas volume, are rarely found in nice condition, and while this set bears plenty of external wear, it is quite clean and fresh internally. The binding is certainly contemporary, and though the reference books are of no help in establishing this, we presume it to be a publisher's deluxe binding, as its yellow endpapers match exactly those of the atlas volume (which we note is in the publisher's standard armorial red cloth). An essential history of George Thomas's outfit, made up principally of Ohio regiments, which marched through Tennessee and Georgia in the final push to win the war. Hinman led a successful public life after the war, serving in local government, including on the Cleveland Board of Education, which organized the first public schools in Cleveland (see the online Encyclopedia of Cleveland History) . Dornbusch III 1261, 1262; Nevins I, p.47; Union Bookshelf 104.…
