paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. The spirit of vaudeville is international and indestructible. But the grand old theaters which housed It in Victorian and Edwardian splendor have nearly all disappeared. Now comes Peter Honri, with an as attractive piece of nostalgia you can want, to recall the triumphs and trials of the British music hall as it grew alongside American vaudeville. American variety - not so different from British music hall - started as an entertainment form in Tony Pastor s New Fourteenth Street Theater in New York. In England it began in beer halls before it graduated to its own specially built 'Palaces of Variety'. Here in this book is all the flavor and atmosphere of the glamor of the footlights and the heartbreaks in the dressing rooms. It's a sparkling history of a hundred years of music hall, woven around the story of Peter's own family - four generations of which, including himself, have 'worked the halls'. The plush seats have folded for the last time, and the promenades and marble-topped bars gone. That warm artiste-and-audience togetherness may have passed, but vaudevillians still flourish in a new medium. Perhaps the London Times Literary Supplement's reviewer hit the spot when he wrote of this book: "It makes a valuable contribution to our knowledge of a kind of entertainment that has a vitality which adapts itself to changing patterns of presentation." And with it comes. A gift 7-inch disc, which tells you in sound what music hall was all about, and a collection of superb illustrations. One day Peter Honri was looking through a mass of music half memorabilia collected by his family over four generations. There were notes, diaries, photos, old play-bills and such by the score. 'Why not, then," asked Peter, "a book about it all?" So he wrote it. Peter is married to former ice-skating star June Bernice, has three delightful kids, and lives in the pleasant countryside of Hampshire, England. Complete with 7 inch record, whose seal has been broken - otherwise this book would be new. All orders shipped protected in a box. Photographs and drawings (illustrator). Book.…
