Het boek is opgebouwd als een interdisciplinair samengestelde tentoonstellingscatalogus waarin beeldende kunst en sociale geschiedenis met elkaar worden verbonden. Na een inleidend deel over het concept moederschap in de 19e eeuw volgen thematische essays over verschillende aspecten van het leven van vrouwen in Nederland. Onderwerpen zoals gezinsstructuren, religieuze invloeden, onderwijs voor meisjes, arbeid, liefdadigheid en prostitutie worden systematisch behandeld. Daarnaast wordt uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan de representatie van vrouwen in schilderkunst en grafiek, waarbij wordt onderzocht hoe kunstenaars het beeld van de moederfiguur idealiseerden of juist problematiseerden. Ook maatschappelijke thema?s zoals geboorteregeling, seksuele moraal en vroege feministische bewegingen komen aan bod. Het geheel toont hoe beeldvorming en sociale realiteit elkaar beïnvloeden en hoe het moederschap fungeerde als centraal cultureel en ideologisch construct in de 19e eeuw.
