Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, Autumn, 1956, Vol. XLIX, No.3. Printed paper covers. Plate. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Original covers lightly soiled and rubbed. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The article on Kirkland, page 294-307, discusses the works of trilogy of fiction he authored, including his The Captain of Company K, the most interesting of the three. It is based on the real war experiences of Illinois soldiers, including his own in Company C, 12th Illinois Infantry and later on the staff of General McClellan and later Fitz-John Porter. Following the court-martial of Porter, he became embittered and resigned his commission. Kirkland's novel of the war came to represent Illinois' effort in the war. Unusual study on a relatively unexplored field of Civil War fiction written by the active soldiers. Other interesting articles in this journal include Lincolniana, Frank H. Hall, the Piasa bird, and the discovery of a real Lincoln fingerprint. REFERENCE: Dornbusch Ill #104.
