Published in the Daily Express, 30 August 1954, on page six, for an article by Elizabeth Pakenham entitled "Do pets steal too much love?", this is a superb example of Hoffnung's gentle humour, in which a besotted small girl is feeding her beloved pony. Both are smiling, the pony has its tongue out, and the small girl's eyes are closed in rapturous contentment. The artist and musician Gerard Hoffnung (1925-1959) enjoyed a successful but brief career as a cartoonist, contributing to Lilliput, Punch, the Strand Magazine and The Tatler. His set of musical cartoons, from The Maestro (1953) to Hoffnung's Acoustics (1959), were one inspiration behind the Hoffnung music festivals, held at the Royal Festival Hall. Numerous distinguished musicians appeared, including Malcolm Arnold, Donald Swann, Dennis Brain, Aaron Copland, and William Walton. Writing in a reprint of the Hoffnung Companion to Music in 2000, the comedian Harry Enfield noted "Gerard Hoffnung is a treat. His contribution to civilisation is immensely valuable, and it is wonderful that we can still celebrate it and be warmed by it. I love him for his humour". Harry Enfield, "Foreword", The Hoffnung Companion to Music, 2000. Original drawing (72 x 103 mm) on thick paper (170 x 248 mm). Drawn in pen and ink, signed with initial lower right ("H."), title below mount ("The real pony fans are small girls"). Mounted, framed, and glazed (framed size 265 x 334 mm). Some minor toning in lower right corner.
No Binding. Condition: Fine. "FROG IN THE THROAT, I THOUGHT AS MUCH." Original work on paper, pen and ink and colours signed by Hoffnung. Caption top right hand corner in hand of Huffnung 'Frog in the throat I thought as much'. Framed and glazed 20 x 16 ins (40 x 50 cm). Signed by Author(s).
