Add to basketLarge 4to, pp. [82] including 16 full-page etchings. Errata slip loosely inserted. Original black cloth backed in black plastic, front board lettered in grey. Small mark to half-title. Boards lightly soiled and a little marked, edges just a touch bumped in places. The etchings date from the early sixties and were originally conceived as a series of 8, transposing the subject of Hogarth?s namesake series of paintings to North America. At the suggestion of the Royal College of Art Hockney expanded the series, and they were first published in 1963 in an edition of 50. When the Lion and Unicorn Press prepared this edition, they commissioned American poet David Posner to write a poem which, per the verso of the half-title ?which was to be a work in its own right and not necessarily an illustration to David Hockney?s engravings..…

Add to basketFirst edition, with the errata sheet loose as issued; one of 450 copies only. Simultaneously an homage and riposte to Hogarth's moralizing series of the same name, A Rake's Progress was Hockney's first major print series, reproduced on a smaller scale here and juxtaposed with Posner's poem. While Hogarth's rake descends into ruin, Hockney's is faced with a crisis of identity, rather than morality. The series is viewed as a thinly veiled autobiographical account of Hockney's own experience of arriving in New York. Hockney began work on the original etchings in September 1961 and the set was published as an edition of 50 in 1963 by Editions Alecto. Hockney himself suggested Posner write the accompanying poem, designed to function as a stand-alone work in its own right, for this edition. Square folio. Illustrated with 16 reduced halftone letterpress blocks after etchings by Hockney. Original black cloth boards with slide-on plastic spine binder, front cover lettered in grey, illustrated endpapers, printed on Dual White Proven art paper. With original packing box. Spotting to boards, first and last leaves, and errata: otherwise, a very good copy with illustrations clean and bright.…
