Robert von Hirschs knowledge of art was based on travel, study and much reading. Bernard Berenson, towards the end of his life, once declared to Michael Stettler that he had only met three collectors who actually knew about the things they were collecting and these were the two Stoclets and Robert von Hirsch. The reference library at the Engelgasse was of outstanding quality. Robert von Hirschs interest in the Basel Kunstmuseum was soon aroused and he became a member of its board.
