Lo que el libro es en realidad nos lo dice el subtítulo —«Figuras y Mitos»—: una especie, pues, de Mitología del Fin de Sidel intrincado mundo de su «.fin-de-siéclev-, más bien ha buscado lo contrario…, extraviarnos en esta tupida selva con el fin de que glo. En efecto, una de las tesis —la más importante, tal vez.— que esta obra decanta, y el autor lo anuncia de un modo explícito en la introducción, es ésta: la mitología no es cosa remota, pasada; llega hasta finales del siglo xix, por lo menos, si es que no pervive, de alguna forma, hasta nuestros días. Son figuras y mitos de muy diverso orden; tomadas del mundo humano —el dandy, la femme fatale, la femme fragüe.—, de la realidad urbana —Brujas, Venecia, Toledo, «Perle».— y de las ficciones de la fantasía —el centauro, el hermafrodita.—. Resulta difícil orientarse en un universo de figuras y mitos tan abigarrado y contradictorio. El autor de este libro no ha pretendido trazamos un plano cobremos un contacto directo con la atmósfera de entre siglos. Han Hinterháuser ha sido Lector de alemán en las Universidades de Venecia y Madrid, profesor invitado en la Facultad de Humanidades de Montevideo, catedrático de Filología románica en Kiel y en Bonn, y desde 1972 en Viena. Entre sus obras figuran Italia entre el negro y el rojo (1956), Utopia y realidad en Diderot (1957), Moderne italienische Lyrik (1964). Su más reciente publicación es una antología, España y Europa. Testimonios sobre la evolución de sus relaciones desde la Ilustración hasta nuestros días. En España es especialmente conocido por Los Episodios nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós (1963).
