Geheftet. Condition: Sehr gut. S. 330-333. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. - The historical context of these illustrations explains why they have fascinated generations of art historians. They probably originated in Tabriz, which for a brief period of less than a century was one of the key cities of the East and in which Persians and Mongols mingled with Arabs, Turks, Chinese, Byzantines and Venetians. This unique conjunction of races and cultural traditions naturally produced a highly individual art. In the field of manuscript illumination this art, though of striking power and originality, could be termed a hothouse product, owing its very existence to the official scriptoria established at Tabriz by Rashid al-Din. geheftet. Condition: Akzeptabel. p. 148-174, 30 fig. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. - The status of the tomb of Rukn-i 'Alam at Multan as the finest Islamic mausoleum of pre-Mughal India has never seriously been disputed. There is no reason to rehearse now the grounds on which this judgment is based. Nevertheless, it must be admitted that the monument has yet to take its rightful place within the wider context of medieval architecture in the eastern Islamic world. Hitherto, it has been studied principally as an outstanding example of early Indo-Islamic architecture, and its close links with the monuments of the Delhi area in particular do amplyjustify this proceeding. The Multan tomb can indeed be seen as an early representative of an illustrious tradition of mausolea which culminated in the Taj Mahal. Book
Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. 13 p., 2 fig., 18 pl. From the library of Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, long-time director of the Tehran branch of the German Archaeological Institute. - A little light-margined, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The present article has two aims: to describe in detail a hitherto little-known mediaeval mosque, the Masjid-i Jämi at Qurva; and to assess its significance in the history of the Iranian mosque (Pl. 1). Discussion of the historical context of the mosque depends very largely on its date; hence a detailed analysis of its monumental inscriptions has been necessary. Given their damaged state, this analysis can only be regarded as tentative. But the building is of interest on other grounds too. Despite the diminutive size of the mosque, its exterior creates a monumental effect by juxtaposing a few bold yet simple forms. Strong sunlight emphasizes the inherent contrast between the base, the zone of transition and the dome (Pl. 2). The interior exhibits a wealth of brick and stucco decoration, some of it in a style which is virtually unknown elsewhere in Iran. For all its richness, this decoration is well disciplined; it does not obscure the architectural features which it covers. Form and decoration are thus complementary. Finally, the location of the mosque in a village some 70 km. from the nearest important town shows that the standard of Saljuq building and decoration in the provinces yielded little to that of the best work in the towns. - Wikipedia: Robert Hillenbrand FBA (born August 1941) is a British art historian who specialises in Persian and Islamic art. He is a professorial fellow of the universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews. He was Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Cambridge for 2008-09. He gave the 2010 Aspects of Art Lecture. Mit zahlr. Abb. Geheftet. Condition: Gut. 35 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. - This paper discusses certain problems of interpretation posed by the residences of caliphs and princes of the Umayyad dynasty (AD 661-750) in the Syrian desert. Some typical palaces will be examined, and their functions explored, in the light of the literary sources. This will lead naturally to a detailed account of the life-style followed by the Caliph al-Walid II, who is generally accepted as the builder of the finest Umayyad palaces. Reflections of his personality, tastes and activities are, it will be seen, legion in these buildings. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Offprint from: Art History, Vol, 5, Number 1, March 1982.
