Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First published in 1909, this is an undated edition of c. 1920 or slightly later (from other bibliographic sources and one of the illustrations is dated 1918). Pale brown illustrated covers (Mr Punch and his dog), no jacket as issued. Covers a little rubbed and worn at extremities, slight lean, s…ome browning and dust staining to page block, some offsetting and spotting to endpapers, no price, no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 192pp, illustrated. The editor of this volume Sir John Alexander Hammerton (1871-1949), was a Scot principally known as an excyclopedist (he worked principally with Arthur Mee). 'Punch' was founded in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood engraver Ebenezer Landells, on an initial investment of £25. It was jointly edited by Mayhew and Mark Lemon. It was subtitled 'The London Charivari' in homage to Charles Philipon's French satirical humour magazine Le Charivari. Reflecting their satiric and humorous intent, the two editors took for their name and masthead the anarchic glove puppet Mr. Punch of Punch and Judy. Circulation broke the 100,000 mark around 1910 and peaked in 1948 at 184,000. Sales declined steadily thereafter. Ultimately, the magazine was forced to close in 2002 after 161 years of publication. A very funny series of golfing stories. Quite a scarce book. Covers by Hassall, illustrations by Phil May, George Du Maurier, L. Raven-Hill et al (illustrator).

As new condition white boards with black spine lettering contained in an as new condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preliminary Page Quote by Frederick Douglass; Author Dedication; 1776 Unites Mission Statement; Foreword by Dr. Lucas E. Morel…; Introduction: The Crucial Voice of "1776" by Robert L. Woodson, Sr.; Biographies of Contributing Authors; Endnotes and Acknowledgments. " "An indispensable corrective to the falsified version of black history presented by The 1619 Project, radical activists, and money-hungry "diversity consultants." In the rush to redefine the place of black Americans in contemporary society, many radical activists and academics have mounted a campaign to destroy traditional American history and replace it with a politicized version that few would recognize. According to the new radical orthodoxy, the United States was founded as a racist nation -- and everything that has happened throughout our history must be viewed through the lens of the systemic oppression of black people. Rejecting this false narrative, a collection of the most prominent and respected black scholars and thinkers has come together to correct the record and tell the true story of black Americans in all its complexity, diversity of experience, and poignancy. Collectively, they paint a vivid picture of black people living the grand American experience, however bumpy the road may be along the way. But rather than a people apart, blacks are woven into the united whole that makes this nation unique in history." -- from the rear outer jacket. "1776 Unites represents a nonpartisan and intellectually diverse alliance of writers, thinkers, and activists focused on solutions to our country's greatest challenges in education, culture, and upward mobility. We acknowledge that racial discrimination exists - and work toward diminishing it. But we dissent from contemporary groupthink and rhetoric about race, class, and American history that defames our national heritage, divides our people, and instills helplessness among those who already hold within themselves the grit and resilience to better their lot in life. 1776 Unites maintains a special focus on voices in the black community who celebrate black excellence, reject victimhood culture and showcase the millions of black Americans who have prospered by embracing the founding ideals of America. We are intellectuals, journalists, entrepreneurs, and grassroots activists, celebrating the progress America has made, the resilience of its people, and our future together. We seek decisive action in restoring our people's confidence and advancing the cause of actual justice in the face of hostile messages that degrade the spiritual, moral, and political foundations of our nation." -- from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Community activist Robert L. "Bob" Woodson has devoted his career to helping low-income people transcend their impoverished conditions. Woodson has used his own rise from poverty to assist him as the founder and president of the National Center for Neighborhood Enterprise (NCNE). Woodson received a prestigious "Genius Grant" from the MacArthur Foundation in 1990. He sits on the boards of the American Association of Enterprise Zones, the Commission on National and Community Service, and the Commonwealth Foundation. Woodson has also written extensively on issues of poverty and empowerment. Shea, Tiffani (cover design) (illustrator).

Add to basketSingle Issue Magazine. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1923. First Edition. Vol XI, No. 4, for 1923. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year - monthly designations for such an infr…equent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 115 pp. + numerous unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a fold-out map (Grouse Meadows to Vidette Meadow) and a fold-out wide-angle photograph by W.H. Wright. Gray stapled wraps, rather than the usual medium brown. Very Good; circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). Some damage at inside front hinge area, and some spine sunning and abrasion. A handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others, including Robert L. Lipman, A.C. Lovekin, J.S. Hutchinson, James K. Moffitt, Ansel F. Hall, Frank A. Williamson, C.O. Schneider, W. Harris (an 1867 shot), Con L. Grover, Frederick H. Morley, Walter L.
