Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Flip on the entertainment news, open an issue of a popular magazine, or step into any department storeand you'll appreciate the impact of the multibillion-dollar fashion industry on American culture. Yet its origins in the nineteenth-century "rag trade" of Jewish tailors, cutters, pressers, pedlars, and shopkeepers have yet to be fully explored. In this copiously illustrated volume, scholars from varied backgrounds consider the role of American Jews in creating, developing, and furthering the national garment industry from the Civil War forward. Drawn from an award-winning exhibition of the same title at the Yeshiva University Museum, A Perfect Fit provides a fascinating view of American society, culture, and industrialisation. Essays address themes such as the development of the menswear industry; the early film industry and its relationship to American fashion; the relationship of the American industry to Britain and France; the acculturation of Jewish immigrants and its impact on American garment making; advertising history and popular culture; and regional centres of manufacturing. This multivalent group of essays compellingly weaves together important threads of the complex history of the American garment industry.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and inscribed by the artist with a lovely original pen and ink drawing (see photo). The inscription reads 'To O. Aldon James, Jr., from Michael Gleizer, 2/28/94, N.Y.'. Mr. James was the president (1985-2011) of the National Arts Club, a private club on Gramercy Park in Manhattan, New York City. Michael Gleizer is a Ukrainian-born Jewish artist, who immigrated to the United States in 1991. There are 50 full-page color reproductions of his works. You can see the book and dust jacket in the photographs provided. Both are in Near Fine to Fine condition. I don't see any issues with either that need to be called out. The covers of the book are very clean. The gilt lettering on the front and spine is very bright. There isn't any wear to be seen, not on the corners or edges or spine ends. The interior the book gets the same high praise. I don't see any soiling anywhere. No creases. No dogeared corners. Bright, glossy, pages. Beautiful paintings. No markings, no attachments. And with the exception of the artist's signed inscription and drawing, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The book is also very solidly bound, square and tight. The dust jacket is in excellent condition. It is NOT clipped. It doesn't have any tears. It doesn't have any soiling. It doesn't have any creases. It will be fitted with a protective cover. From the Foreword ' Among the great artists whose work we (the Chassidic Art Institute) have exhibited over the years, work of recent immigrant from Russia, Michael Gleizer, stands out. His work amazes me, and touches me in a very personal way. Gleizer's paintings, truly a treasure to behold, were secreted away for many years, hidden from the outside world. Now of this book, the public has the opportunity to share his vision.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
