Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Gertrude Hermes. (illustrator). First Edition Thus. 1st Edition Thus 1938 with wood engravings by Gertrude Hermes. Ownership Inscription of Susan Connely and a presentation inscription of Henry Williamson to her. A few annotation in the hand of Williamson. Dated 1946. When HW first returned to Georgeham in October 1946 after his breakup of this marriage he stayed for a short while with his friends Mike and Margery Mitchell in a villagenear HW's Field at Ox's Cross and the woods of nearby Spreacombe. At this point HW fell in love with Susan Connely, the sixteen-year-old step-daughter of his friend Malcolm Elwin, who was married to Eve Connely and living by courtesy of a friend at Underborough at Westward Ho! (It was Elwin who was the key to the Chronicle being published by Macdonald.) That potential 'Barleybright' relationship was, however, terminated very firmly by the Elwins (mainly by Eve) to HW's inevitable anguish. Susan plays an important role in The Gale of the World the final volume in the Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight. From the The Hugoe Matthews collection. Hugoe Matthews (1938-2011) was an authority on the Victorian novelist and nature writer Richard Jefferies, of whose works he created probably the finest collection in private hands. In collaboration with George Miller, Matthews wrote the definitive bibliography of Jefferies' works, published by Scolar Press in 1993 and served for many years as President of the Richard Jefferies Society. The book is good++ and bright. Edges lightly rubbed. Age toned. Contents good. Pages age toned. More images can be taken upon request. Ref A1234.

No Binding. Condition: Fine. HERMES Gertrude [Anna Bertha] 1901-1983 (illustrator). Limited Edition. One of the 100 sets of the wood engravings, of which only fifty were sold as complete suites (AS IS THIS), (these accompanied by the text volume containing W. H. Davies' poems, itself unillustrated and limited to 350 copies); the remaining sets were sold as individual mounted prints. Clamshell case of gray cloth, gilt titles, red paper lined, as issued by the press, containing the ten wood engravings in individual window mounts, each engraving 125 x 103 mm, the case 35 x 28 cm; the accompanying book, 20 pp. in all, measures 35 x 16 cm and is retained in the case by a spacer. The original edition of The Lovers' Song Book emanated from the Gregynog Press in an unillustrated form in 1933, though both Blair Hughes-Stanton and Gertrude Hermes had previously attempted to provide illustrations (in the case of Hughes-Stanton, a trial proof was issued, which is very rare). Neither artist's work found acceptance with the directors of the Press, and Hermes's work on it seemed consigned to oblivion until David Esselmont's splendid printing emerged. This set contains two versions of the prospectus and two order forms.
