I was born starry-eyed on 19 April with Aries at its zenith Herbert Wilcox observes at the beginning of Twenty-Five Thousand Sunsets for Herbert Wilcox is one of the best-known personalities in the British film industry-as a producer director and financier. And during his long and eventful career he has known many of the leading luminaries on both sides of the Atlantic. There was Dorothy Gish for example ("fundamentally she is extremely intelligent and wildly humorous") and Charlie Chaplin. ("l . . .was astounded that a man as funny as he was as a drunk on the stage could also in real life be so serious and abstemious.") "and I've lived with stars in my eyes ever since." And he has lived with stars on the screen (and behind the screen) Mr. Wilcox considers Rex Harrison to be the finest star he ever directed and of Orson Welles he remarks: "Orson's greeting when he sees me is invariably a huge beaming face like a setting sun his arms envelop me and [he kisses] both my cheeks." In this witty autobiography Mr. Wilcox discusses his entire career-both his triumphs and failures-from the early days in Ireland through his hard childhood in Brighton where he earned his pennies selling newspapers and a pool-hall champion. In World War 1 Mr. Wilcox was kept busy as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps (he even got to see the Red Baron's downed plane) then becoming in turn a hotel page and a chorus boy but nevertheless found time to get married twice.It was not until after the war that film career began. After a precarious start as a salesman he rose rapidly in the industry. Very slight bumping to top and bottom of the spine. The dust jacket has wear at the top and bottom one minor rip repaired. All orders shipped protected in a box. Book.
