The author describes the experimental successes that began with one male calf in 1933 who thrived o…n a diet of colostrum and skim milk supplemented with cod liver oil. The author goes on to describe the expansion of this study to include over 100 calves, both male and female, over the following decade. The author describes how they tested the effects of weaning calves at different ages, ranging from 30 to 90 days, and with the addition of supplements to increase nutrient intake, such as flaxseed jelly and grain mixtures. The primary focus of this book is on the nutritional needs of calves and the practical application of this research within the economic constraints of dairy farming. The broad historical context of the book is the development of scientific knowledge about animal nutrition.
