Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Published in 1982, "this reference work is a compilation of biographical sketches of deceased Alabamians who were important, visible, or sometimes notorious throughout the history of this remarkable state. The sketches, although composed mainly from secondary sources, nevertheless are taken from those not readily available to the student of layman interested in Alabama history. Being popular-based, it includes sports figures, entertainers, and other personalities not usually covered in the more academic reference works. Many are brief, but it has been the intent of the compilers to present only the most significant features of the biographees in order to make this work easier to use and to enable us to include more of them.".

Paperback. Condition: Collectible: Very Good. Signed and inscribed by author on front endpaper - 1st Edition (1962) VERY GOOD with no marks in text. Light wear on cover. 173 pages maps 23 cm (all of the Letters, Telegrams and Memorandums in the Appendix are on one side of the page) . . . . This 1962 study by Henry S. Marks examines how the United States failed to safeguard the nominal independence of Korea in the decade between the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo?Japanese War, despite earlier treaty ties and rhetorical commitments to Korean sovereignty. Focusing on American diplomacy toward Japan and Korea from 1894 to 1905, Marks argues that Washington gradually accepted Japanese predominance on the peninsula, culminating in tacit acquiescence to Japan?s protectorate after 1905 rather than any meaningful defense of Korean autonomy. Within this framework, Marks pays particular attention to the situation of Americans in Korea - missionaries, businesspeople, and consular officials - showing how U.S. reluctance to challenge Japanese expansion undermined their security, influence, and ability to operate independently of Japanese control. He situates their experiences against the backdrop of great?power rivalry, demonstrating that the shift in U.S. policy from nominal support for Korean independence to acceptance of Japanese suzerainty left American residents exposed to shifting regulations, surveillance, and constraints once Japan consolidated authority after the Russo?Japanese War.
