Nostradamus began to write his prophetic verses in the city of Salon, in 1554. They are divided into ten sections called Centuries (which refers to the number of verses in each section, not to a unit of 100 years). The Centuries were published in 1555 and 1558, and have been in print continuously ever since. Nostradamus had the visions which he later recorded in verse while staring into water or flame late at night, sometimes aided by herbal stimulants, while sitting on a brass tripod. The resulting quatrains (four line verses) are oblique and elliptical, and use puns, anagrams and allegorical imagery. Most of the quatrains are open to multiple interpretations, and some make no sense whatsoever. Some of them are chilling, literal descriptions of events, giving specific or near- specific names, geographic locations, astrological configurations, and sometimes actual dates. It is this quality of both vagueness and specificity which allows each new generation to reinterpret Nostradamus. A clean very presentable copy.

"The only unabridged, definitive edition of the authentic words of Nostradamus since 1672. An exact verbatim translation together with the original Old French verses, exactly as they appeared in the Mace Bonhomme edition published in Lyons 1568. More amazing and startling than science-fiction. A few of the events Nostradamus predicts: "Atomic Warfare: - Date and circumstances given. "Return of Hitler" - Actual date when he will return alive; "War with Russia" - coming conflict foreshadowed; "Cataclysmic Destruction of Great Cities" - date of next World War; "Final Fate of teh Word," etc. etc. Over 1,000 predictions extending unto 3797 A.D." - from the outer rear jacket. "Here for thefirst time are all the prophetic verses of Nostradamus in one volume. Included are the original French text, a new English translation, and Mr. Roberts' interpretation of each and every prophecy, relating the mystic vision of the great seer to actual and future world events. Mr. Roberts is the foremost American exponent of the celebrated soothsayer and is regarded by many as Nostradamus Redivivus. The secret of Nostradamus' power to foresee the future has never been fully explained. But with this book the reader is at last able to see for himself the scope of that power, and with the aid of Mr. Roberts' interpretations, to open the door of the future." - from the inner front jacket flap.
