There is some edge rubbing and light surface wear to the boards with a little staining near the bottom of the rear panel on volume I. The gilt lettering and decorations on the spine are fa…irly bright. Gilt to the top edges of the pages with some scattered dark stains to the top edges of volume II. Browning to the other page edges. Some brown spotting to the pages at the front and back of the books but the pages are generally otherwise unmarked. Three volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for all orders.

Pepys had no maritime experience, but he rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II through patronage, hard work, and his talent for administration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. The detailed private diary that Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London. Ref YY5.

This edition, initially published in 10 volumes between 1893 and 1899, is reasonably complete but remains coy about Pepeys's sexual adventures. For the acknowled complete and unexpurgated edition you need to get the editio ppublished between 1970 and 1983 by Bell & Hyman and by the University of California Press. Despite the Victorian reticence the work is a fascinating item to read and gives great insight in ordinary life in the Restoration period. . . . The set weighs approach 4kg but the price shown, together with the default postage cost, will cover carriage within the UK. In the case of overseas order there may need to be a small carriage supplement, depending on destination.
