Orig. dustwrappers. 364 pp. Illustr. b/w Dutch & French text. - De catalogus Seuphor samengesteld door Herbert Henkels, werd in 1976 uitgegeven ter gelegenheid van de overzichtstentoonstelling in het Haags Gemeentemuseum van de Belgische kunstenaar Michel Seuphor,…Deze rijk geïllustreerde monografie van 364 pagina's biedt een diepgaand inzicht in het veelzijdige oeuvre van Michel Seuphor, pseudoniem van Fernand-Louis Berckelaers (1901-1999). Het boek bevat bijdragen van onder anderen Rik Sauwen, German Viatte en Seuphor zelf, en is tweetalig opgesteld in het Nederlands en Frans. Seuphor was een sleutelfiguur in de ontwikkeling van de abstracte kunst in Europa. Als dichter, essayist, kunsthistoricus en beeldend kunstenaar stond hij aan de wieg van avant-gardistische bewegingen en tijdschriften zoals Het Overzicht en Cercle et Carré. Zijn artistieke werk evolueerde van geometrisch abstracte gouaches in de jaren 1920 naar de kenmerkende "dessins à lacunes" vanaf de jaren 1950: lijntekeningen met onderbrekingen die vormen en ritmes suggereren. De tentoonstelling en bijbehorende catalogus belichten Seuphors streven naar een synthese tussen woord en beeld, zichtbaar in zijn "tableaux-poèmes". Daarnaast documenteert het boek zijn bijdragen aan de kunstgeschiedenis, waaronder zijn naslagwerken over abstracte schilderkunst en moderne beeldhouwkunst en is daardoor een uitgebreid overzicht van Seuphors artistieke en intellectuele nalatenschap.
