The definitive handbook for United States Marine Corps officers, this cloth-bound volume is the fourth edition (text revised through 1977) with the publisher's explicit 'Second Printing, 1980' notation on the colophon. Navy cloth, gilt U.S.M.C. emblem on…the front board, red-and-gold spine bands; pictorial dust jacket present. This copy is Very Good in the binding: square, tight, and clean internally with sound hinges and no loose gatherings; contents complete and readable, with maps/plates intact and one owner inscription on front endpaper. The pictorial jacket is Good: present and whole with modest edge-wear, short closed tears at the spine ends and flap corners, faint rubbing and a small area of tape-repair to the jacket verso (shown in photos); the jacket remains fully serviceable for display. Laid in is original military ephemera - a bright yellow Marine Corps Development & Education Command (Quantico, VA) card for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, 6 November 1981 (ticket number 000692.) Condition & edition determination. The colophon clearly states 'Fourth Edition - Second Printing, 1980,' which makes this a later printing of the widely used fourth edition rather than a first printing. Binding shows only light shelf/handling wear (minor corner bumping, modest board soil). Internally clean with no library markings; all text, photographs and plates are present and intact. Robert D. Heinl Jr. was a Marine officer, historian and longtime contributor to Marine professional literature; his Marine Officer's Guide is a standard reference that has been updated through multiple editions.
