First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition; First Printing. 4 p.l., 336 & [1] pages; Publisher's tan cloth, spine lettered in brown. A decent copy, lacking the dust jacket. With a very interesting inscription, boldly written on the front free-endpaper in blue ink (fountain pen): To Mrs. William Randolph Hearst Jr., / In appreciation of / her intelligence -- / [signed] Dennis Chavez / New Mexico / 1952." Dennis Chavez [born Dionisio Chavez (April 8, 1888 November 18, 1962)] was a Democratic politician from the U.S. State of New Mexico who served in the United States House of Representatives, and in the United States Senate from 1935 to 1962. His rise to the Senate was most unusual, including two periods studying in night school. Young Chavez's first job was delivering groceries at the Highland Grocery store. Later on, he studied engineering and surveying at night, and worked as an engineer for the City of Albuquerque for several years. He married and moved to Belen, and then worked briefly as editor of a Belen weekly newspaper, as a court interpreter, and as a private contractor until 1916, when he obtained temporary employment as a Spanish interpreter for Senator Andrieus A. Jones' election campaign. In 1917, he was offered a position as assistant executive clerk of the Senate in Washington, D.C. by Senator Jones. He accepted this position, passed a special admission exam at Georgetown University Law Center and studied law at night. He graduated from Georgetown in 1920, and returned to Albuquerque to establish a law practice. In 1922, Chavez was elected to the New Mexico state legislature, but he did not seek another term. In 1930, he was elected to New Mexico's one statewide seat in the U. S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, and was re-elected in 1932. Chavez served as chairman of the House Committee on Indian Affairs. Chavez was the Democratic Party nominee for U.S. Senator from New Mexico in 1934. He lost to William Bronson Cutting, but was appointed to the seat when Cutting was killed in an airplane crash. He won an election to the remainder of the term, and was subsequently re-elected in 1940, 1946, 1952, and 1958, and served till his death in 1962. In the 1940 re-election, Dennis Chavez became the first person of Hispanic descent to be elected to a full term in the Senate. (Octaviano Larrazolo was the first Hispanic to be elected to the U.S. Senate, but he was only elected to a remainder of an unexpired term, as Chavez had been, initially, in 1936.) In addition to his historic terms in the U.S. Senate, Dennis Chavez is also credited by many historians as the first Hispanic candidate for the U. S. Presidency. The recipient of this copy from Senator Chavez was the third Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Jr. -- Austine McDonnell Hearst. In 1946, she became a reporter at 'The Washington Times-Herald,' (now defunct). She wrote a sociey column, "Under My Hat," and later wrote a syndicated column, "From the Capital." She was also a commentator for the Columbia Broadcasting System. She and William Randolph Hearst Jr., chairman of the Hearst Corporation, were married in 1948. Her first marriage, to Igor Cassini, (newspaper columnist and brother to Oleg Cassini, the fashion designer), ended in divorce.; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated.
