Se il Moehler, il Passaglia, il Franzelin e lo Scheeben potessero levare il capo dalla tomba vedrebbero che il seme da…essi generosamente gettato ha fruttato il cento per uno. Dopo una promettente primavera di studi, passati al vaglio dell'immortale Enciclica Mystici Corporis (1934), ora assistiamo quasi alla raccolta di un maturo autunno. Tra le tante opere, frutto di studio per- sonale, è doveroso ricordare quella del ch. prof. Hasseveldt, che da molti anni insegna teologia fondamentale nel Seminario Maggiore di Lilla, di cui è anche Direttore. Lo scopo diretto del dotto Autore è quello di offrire agli studenti laici un manuale facile, sicuro, moderno e attraente di Ecclesiologia; qualunque lettore può assicurare, se ce ne fosse bisogno, che l'intento è stato pienamente raggiunto. La divisione dell'opera è veramente suggestiva: in una prima parte si delinea una specie di metafisica della Chiesa: gli elementi eterni ed immutabili della sua natura, costituiti dalla comunione di tutto il genere umano alla vita di Dio per mezzo di Cristo. Sant'Atanasio considerava la vita di Dio scendente dal seno del Padre nel Figlio di Maria, «de cuius plenitudine omnes accepimus», i moderni contemplano il processo inverso: l'umanità che, agganciata a Cristo, Verbo Incarnato, risale verso il Padre, da cui uscì per la creazione, si allontanò per il peccato, ritorna per la Redenzione. Nella seconda parte l'A. determina, con ampiezza di vedute, le leggi fondamentali del ciclo storico della Chiesa: dal Vecchio al Nuovo, dal Nuovo all'Eterno. Vi si leggono pagine deliziose sul divenire e l'avvenire della Chiesa, sull'inizio e il termine del suo secolare cammino, da cui emerge quasi la chiara e attraente trama di una teologia della storia. L'ultima parte mostra nella sintesi dei due elementi (eterno e tempora- le, invisibile e visibile) l'intima na- tura della Chiesa Cattolica, «il luogo attuale dell'esistenza del popolo di Dio». Lo sviluppo dei singoli punti dottrinali è fatto con largo e costante riferimento alla Scrittura e ai Padri, in modo che le frasi bibliche con la loro concretezza e le immagini patristiche con la loro plasticità s'imprimono nella mente del lettore. L'A. ha destinato la sua opera ai giovani laici; ammiriamo la sua modestia, ma non possiamo non segnalare agli studiosi dei problemi ecclesiastici questo libro, pieno di suggerimenti espliciti e di suggestioni implicite, ricco di tutto quello che il moderno progresso degli studi ha prodotto e nello stesso tempo avanzante per vie nuove o messe a nuovo.
