As tensions between the US and Spain escalated in 1898, the regiment, fueled by patriotic zeal, volunteered as part of the effort to aid Cuba's fight for independence. The author, a member of the regiment, chronicles their journey from recruitment and training at Camp Framingham to their deployment in Cuba, where, although they missed direct combat due to a swift Spanish surrender, they played a crucial role in maintaining order and providing aid to the war-torn country. Through the author's vivid accounts, readers will gain insights into the complexities of war, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring legacy of service and sacrifice. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good-. 392 pages, illustrated. "Massachusetts has furnished her full quota of men at every call of the country. Old Essex (County) has given her share, and as one of the Essex Regiments, the Eighth has figured on several occasions. Of those previous to 1898 this volume has no detailed account to present, but it is a matter of pride to the citizens of this country that it is said of the Eighth Masschusetts that it was the first National Guard regiment ready, after a canvass of its officers and men, to volunteer, and was one of the first to leave the state in the service of the nation in the conflict with Spain." VERY GOOD- HARDCOVER, blue cloth covers, lettering is bright on the spine. Defects noted: front blank endpaper is missing from the book, and it appears that the front spine edge was repaired and two pages are glued together along the spine in a small area. The book is in very good condition otherwise, and the binding is tight. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
