Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Two faint reading creases to spine of this otherwise pristine (unread) hefty trade paperback, call it "near-fine." Published in the Year 2000 (although this text originally copyright 1984.) Brief preface to the 1999 reprint explains the recordings are still referred to here by their s…hellac or vinyl record numbers, as adding the numbers of the numerous CD reissues was judged to be "a nightmare and an unending task." Starts with the pre-1920 and 1920s precursors including the Savannah Syncopators and numerous jug bands and piano rags. The short final chapter is called "The Transition to Modern Jazz," featuring "Hot Lips" Page, Red Norvo with Charles Mingus, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Parker, etc. (The modern bop era to be forthcoming in Vol. II.) 595 pp. including Index. Reduced from $70.
