The 1920 edition of The Ingoldsby Legends illustrated by Arthur Rackham is a lavish, highly collectible volume combining Richard Harris Barham's comic‑gothic tales with some of Rackham's most atmospheric Golden Age illustrations. It is prized today for its craftsmanship, its place in Rackham's career, and its distinctive blend of humour, folklore, and the supernatural. The Ingoldsby Legends is a collection of humorous, often macabre stories and poems written by Richard Harris Barham under the pen name Thomas Ingoldsby. The tales draw on English folklore, medieval legends, ghost stories, and satirical verse. They were originally published in the 1840s and became a Victorian favourite. The 1920 Rackham‑illustrated edition is one of the most celebrated illustrated versions, produced during the tail end of the Golden Age of Illustration. Ref PPP 2. Arthur Rackham (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is one of the earliest attempts to systematically examine the attributes assumed by the gods in ancient philosophy. The author, a philosopher himself, presents the arguments of several schools of thought in turn, using a series of dialogues between supporters of different vie…wpoints. With each philosopher presenting their case and then having it questioned by the others, this book is an excellent way to get to grips with classical metaphysics. The author's decision to focus on the nature of the gods works well, as it allows us to see the same problems being tackled with a variety of different approaches, which many readers will find useful for their own studies or as a foundation for further reading. The work of this philosopher ultimately went on to form a major influence on Christian theology, so this book provides insights into the roots of that system of belief as well. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Leather. Condition: Near Fine. Illustrated in colour by Arthur Rackham, and in a signed full calf Bayntun-Riviere binding, this is a beautiful example of this anthology of myths and legends. A beautiful edition of this anthology of myths and legends, in a full calf signed Bayntun-Riviere binding, and featuring the colour illustr…ations of renowned artist Arthur Rackham.Illustrated with numerous vignette illustrations, a colour frontispiece and eleven further full colour plates, all the work of leading figure of Golden Age of British book illustration, Arthur Rackham. Collated, complete. This is a collection of whimsical legends, myths, and ghost stories written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually the pen-name of clergyman Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. In a full calf signed binding, with gilt detailing. Externally, lovely. Rubbing to front joint, with board holding firm. Binder's stamp to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Near Fine. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). book.
