Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Presumed First Edition. 1923. Presumed first edition. 127pp. plus a 16-page publisher's catalogue dated October 1923. In this book the author tells of his experience of a sudden ans cruel frustration. Born with a passion for physical exercise, a deep love of the open air, and a mind whose curiosit…y could never be sated by observation and adventure, Gerald Slade found himself suddenly sentenced to solitary confinement in the prison of his own body. How he met this doom, how he decided to fight it, and how he succeeded in breaking free from the worst conditions of his fate, is the story of this unusual and haunting volume. The book is bound in the original grey-blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and a little bubbling to the cloth near the fore edge of the front board. The spine ends are lightly bumped and the spine is very slightly cocked. The contents are tight and clean with noticeable foxing to the first few pages, including the title-page, and some scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. The fore and bottom edges of the text block are also foxed and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore and/or bottom margin. There is a brief inscription to Lord [Douglas] Haig from Lady Palmer, dated 1915, on the front free endpaper and a bookseller's label on the top corner of the front fixed endpaper.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the evolution of Earth's investigation from ancient mythological accounts through the era of Church dominance to the threshold of modern scientific inquiry. The author analyzes the origin and evolution of the world's geological features, capturing the gradual shift… in understanding that occurred with each new groundbreaking theory and discovery. From the mythical explanations of early civilizations to the detailed observations of Leonardo da Vinci, the book showcases humanity's relentless pursuit of unraveling the planet's secrets. Along the way, it highlights the ideological clashes between scientific curiosity and religious dogma, underscoring the significant role the Church played in shaping early geological thought. The book illuminates the intellectual struggles and triumphs that have shaped our current understanding of the Earth's history, making it an essential read for anyone interested in the fascinating interplay between science, religion, and the human quest for knowledge. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "Geology - Biology - Zoology (The Outline of Knowledge, Volume VI)" is a comprehensive overview of the natural sciences, curated to provide a foundational understanding of the physical and organic world. This volume serves as an essential guide to the forces that shaped the Earth and the bio…logical evolution that followed. The opening section on geology investigates the composition of the planet, exploring the formation of its crust, the significance of mineral deposits, and the geological eras that transformed the landscape over millions of years. The text transitions seamlessly into the biological and zoological sciences, examining the fundamental principles of life and the vast diversity of the animal kingdom. With contributions from esteemed experts like Dr. William D. Matthew and William T. Hornaday, the work delves into paleontology, the classification of species, and the behavioral traits of wildlife. As a significant entry in the history of scientific pedagogy, this volume reflects an era dedicated to the democratization of knowledge. It remains a valuable resource for readers interested in the historical development of natural history and the structured presentation of scientific facts that defined early 20th-century education. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
