The 1843 issue of the celebrated series of Crockett almanacs that helped make Davy Crockett an American folk hero. The series ran from 1835 to 1856, and although none of the issues were written by the actual David Crockett, he certainly participated in the creation of the mythical Davy, and subsequently in the creation of a large part of the myth and folklore of the frontier and the American West. This copy is one of the later Crockett almanacs, with this particular year full of interest for its inclusion of many western and backwoods tall tales, including "Crockett Waylaid by an Indian," "Old Kaintuck," "Western Bear Story," "The Indian, Crockett and the Boa Constrictor," "Crockett and the Wolves," "A Midnight Arrest," "The Painter (Panther) and the Indian," "Crockett and the Devil," and more. Two full-length poems about the Pilgrims and Bunker Hill are also included. In addition to the usual vignette illustrations, there are a total of six full page wood-cuts in this issue, including one on the final page. Crockett almanacs were also issued in 1843 in New York and Wheeling, Virginia. This Boston edition is quite uncommon, and this is the first copy we have handled. The only other copies we could find in the market were offered over 100 years ago. HOWES C897, "aa." STREETER SALE 4198. Gathered signatures, string-tied. Slight edge wear, a few corners creased. Short pencil inscription in top margin of front page, a bit of foxing and staining. A very good copy. Untrimmed.
