Since it is very difficult to classify of the unicellular organisms as plants or animals two approaches can be found to the classification of din…oflagellates - the botanical and zoological. We have employed the phycological (botanical) approach in our textbook. However, we view the dinoflagellates as protists which exhibit both plant and animal features.Classically phycologists divided dinoflagellates into monads, rhizopods, coccals, capsals and trichals based on morphology. During our studies of freshwater dinoflagellates we have observed and recorded stages transcendent among these forms. We have also lumped many poorly described species. We have listed in the appendix all the freshwater species known. Thus we face a dilemma wether to compile dinoflagellates according to classical systematics or to use the classical approach inserting new information. We have chosen the latter.

The freshwater lichen flora has a huge potential for bioindication of silting, bedrock stability, constancy of inundation and acidification. Many species are in need for conservation efforts, but due to the missing of appropiate tools which facilitate the determination of these organisms, they have only rarely been part of inventories of freshwater bioma so far. Many freshwater lichens are representatives of genera with many species, which have been considered as taxonomically highly problematic.; Band 21 der 'Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa' beschreibt die aquatischen Pilze. Der vorliegende Teil 21/1 behandelt die Süßwasserflechten (symbiotische Assoziationen von Pilzen mit Grünalgen oder Cyanobakterien), die man in fast allen Fließgewässern mit sauberem Wasser und steinigem Bett findet. Die Süßwasserflechten-Flora hat ein großes Potential als Bioindikator für Sedimenteintrag, Stabilität des Gewässerbetts, Konstanz der Überflutung und des ph-Wertes. Mit weniger als 100 Arten sind die Süßwasserflechten eine relativ kleine und systematisch sehr heterogene Gruppe von spezialisierten Pilzen, die die aquatische Lebensweise konvergent erworben haben. Sie gehören mehreren nicht näher verwandten Ordnungen der Ascomycota an.

Taxonomy within this class is based on the ultrastructure of the silica scales and bristles, and electron microscopy is in most cases necessary for the identification. E…ven though the 128 taxa occurring in Europe are emphasized and details of their distribution are given, the volume includes all taxa described worldwide. Thus it is possible to identify all 212 taxa with a high degree of certainty (i.e., 180 taxa of Mallomonas, 30 taxa of Synura, plus the single species of Chrysodidymus and Tessellaria). The importance of this book lies in four main fields:It can be used for the identification of synurophycean taxa in all parts of the world.It will be of particular significance in phytoplankton investigations on diversity and ecology of lakes and ponds. Many species can serve as ecological indicators, and the species-specific silica scales and cysts preserved in sediments can be useful paleobiological indicators for reconstructing a wide variety of human influences on aquatic ecosystems, including acidification, eutrophication and climate change. Last but not least, the book gives a solid basis for further taxonomical studies based on gene sequences. This is the first modern world-comprehensive book on the subject. It will be indispensable for phycologists, but should also find its way to general botanical libraries.
