The album was begun in 1621 and continued for more than half a century, with inscriptions dating from 1621 to 1679. De Glarges's album is exceptional because of its duration, breadth of contacts, and concentration of distinguished names. Among those represented are René Descartes, Jacob Cats, Constantijn and Christiaan Huygens, Caspar Barlaeus, Daniel Heinsius, Isaac Vossius, Claude Saumaise/Salmasius, André Rivet, Joannes Meursius, Petrus Scriverius, and many other scholars, diplomats, artists, military figures, and members of the political elite. The editors provide a substantial introduction and reproduce the inscriptions systematically, provide extensive annotations, a bibliography, indexes, genealogical information, and forty facsimile plates. Condition: as new. Amsterdam : APA-Holland University Press , 2002. Paperback. 304 pp. 24 cm. French & English text. (Tirage à part de Lias : sources and documents relating to the early modern history of ideas, 28). - This critical edition presents 122 annotated letters exchanged between the Dutch naturalist Petrus Camper (1722-1789) and his son Adriaan-Gilles Camper (1759-1820) between 1785 and 1787. During this period, Adriaan-Gilles resided in Paris to advance his scientific education, while Petrus Camper continued his research in Friesland. Petrus Camper was a physician, anatomist, physiologist, naturalist, zoologist, palaeontologist, and anthropologist. He was one of the most important Dutch scholars of the eighteenth century. His research into comparative anatomy, the anatomy of apes and other animals, fossils, and the human skull made him internationally renowned. The French-language correspondence with his son illuminates the circulation of scientific knowledge between the Dutch Republic and France within the intellectual culture of the Enlightenment. The letters concern anatomy, zoology, geology, mineralogy, and related fields, reflecting the emphasis on empirical observation, comparative inquiry, rational investigation, and the systematic study of nature. Particularly revealing are the Campers' efforts to establish scientific contacts with the famous French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, demonstrating the importance of correspondence, reputation, and patronage in eighteenth-century science. By publishing these letters with scholarly annotations, Bots and Visser reveal the social infrastructure underlying Enlightenment knowledge production and European intellectual exchange. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9789030210986. Keywords : HISTORY OF SCIENCE, biology.…

Add to basketLeiden & Boston, Brill, 2008. VI,274 pp. Orig. hardcover (boards). 8vo. (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History, Vol. 167). [ISBN: 9789004165366].This book contains 15 essays by philosophers, theologians and historians from the Netherlands, France, Italy, England and the United States on Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), the French Protestant who found refuge in Rotterdam just before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). From the early 1680s onward, Bayle published a series of seminal works, culminating in his Dictionaire historique et critique (1697), that is generally regarded to have served as the "arsenal" of the Enlightenment. Over the last few decades, Bayle has been rediscovered as one of the key authors of the early Enlightenment, but experts have found it extremely difficult to come to any agreement concerning his ultimate position, most notably concerning the relationship between faith and philosophy. In this volume both Bayle's philosophy and his theological views are assessed as well as his impact on the Enlightenment and beyond.
