Neaulme Reliure plein veau, dos à nerfs orné, fente en tête d'un mors. Bel exemplaire. Edition originale de ce véritable roman picaresque. Contenant particulièrement l'histoire amoureuse de la cour d'Angleterre sous le règne de Charles II. Ce fut Hamilton, beau-frère de Grammont, qui écrivit ces mémoires, à la demande de Grammont lui-même. Il fut difficile de les publier car Fontenelle refusait de laisser paraître l'ouvrage. Grammont réussit à faire lever l'interdiction, mais l'ouvrage ne fut publié que six ans après sa mort. Auteur, en français, d'un roman historico-biographique où il prend pour personnage son propre beau-frère, le comte de Grammont. En 1662, le Chevalier Philibert de Grammont, exilé de France à la cour d'Angleterre, s'éprend de la belle Elizabeth Hamilton, sur de l'auteur, et l'épouse. Lorsque le couple rentre en France, Antoine Hamilton y fait de fréquents voyages. Il est si bien naturalisé à la cour de France qu'à l'occasion de l'un de ses passages il est choisi par Louis XIV pour figurer parmi les acteurs d'un ballet de Quinault, Le Triomphe de l'amour. En 1685, lorsque Jacques II succède à Charles II, l'armée anglaise s'ouvre de nouveau aux catholiques, et Hamilton prend du service en Irlande. Lorsque la cause de Jacques II est compromise, il repasse en France avec son frère Richard, l'un et l'autre devenant familiers de la cour du roi en exil à Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Cette cour est des plus tristes, à cause de l'austère dévotion du roi détrôné et de son entourage. Aussi ne convient-elle guère à l'humeur d'Antoine Hamilton.
