Ihr Tagebuch dokumentiert den Alltag einer jungen Frau zwischen erster Liebe und Tod. Der Einmarsch der Deutschen in Polen und der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs brachten Tod und Schrecken über Millionen Juden. In der ersten Phase von Hitlers Vernichtungskrieg wurden die polnischen Juden in Ghettos gepfercht, zur Zwangsarbeit gezwungen und schließlich in Vernichtungslager deportiert. Halina Nelken war damals 15 Jahre alt und schrieb, wie viele in ihren Kreisen, Tagebuch. Ihr Krakauer Tagebuch ist das einzige polnisch geschriebene Dokument dieser Art, das aus dem Ghetto erhalten blieb. Anders als andere Werke zu diesem Thema strahlt Halina Nelkens Liebe zum Leben aus jeder Zeile. Trotz der Grausamkeit ihrer Erlebnisse bewahrt sie ihre Warmherzigkeit und den Glauben an die Menschheit. Sie betont, dass es ein Irrtum sei, die Lager als Orte des individuellen Leidens zu sehen, denn nur durch menschliche Solidarität konnten einige überleben.
