Synopsis: Darius Milhaud was associated with the avant-garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres. A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, his music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Milhaud was a member of Les Six - (The Group of Six) - and was a leader of Jazz composition in Europe. He is considered one of the key modernist composers as well as conductor and teacher. His autobiography is rare and highly sought after. Of Jewish-French ancestry, he studied in France and Brazil, and emigrated to the United States in 1940 as Germany invaded France. Marius' most notable student was Dave Brubeck. Brubeck specifically went to study with Darius Milhaud when Milhaud was professor at Mills College, Oakland California in the early 1940's. Brubeck named his first son Darius, to honor his great teacher and friend. Additionally, Burt Bacharach studied with and was influenced by Darius Milhaud.
