No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Original billhead printed and handwritten in black ink on light beige paper. Small black-and-white illustration printed at top. Datelined December 16, 1890 in Sacramento, California. 8 1/4" x 4 1/2." Billhead is very clean and intact except for moderate age toning, a few small wrinkles, a small stain not affecting text, a paper stub tipped in on back right edge, and a closed tear measuring about 2 1/4" on the front left edge (repaired by paper stub on back). A Very Good copy. An original billhead from Hale Brothers & Company of Sacramento to P. H. Hjul, an undertaker in Eureka, Nevada. P. H. Hjul purchased one line item, a "Suit." The printed header reads, "Bought of Hale Bros. & Co., Cor Ninth & K Streets; Direct Importers of Dry Goods, Fancy Goods, Ladies Cloaks, Men's & Boy's Clothing, Hats & Caps, Boots & Shoes, Men's Furnishings Goods, Trunks, Valises, Notions. Mail Order Department; Orders by Mail Receive Special Attention." Hale Brothers & Company was founded in 1876 or 1880 by Marshall Hale. Hale Bros. was dry goods company that featured both brick-and-mortar and mail-order services. Marshall's grandsons, including Prentiss Cobb Hale, would continue his legacy by operating the family business under the same name. In 1949, Hale's bought Weinstock's and then merged with Broadway Department Stores later that year.
