Chatto and Windus, London, 1939, first edition; 8vo, 160 x 225mm; pp xix, 434, frontispiece and 75 other illustrations, a few of them coloured and some full page; red cloth, spine titled gilt, a few small tears at the head of the spine and the spine itself a little… dulled but otherwise a good copy. . . . . . Introduction by J B S Haldane ands edited by him also. The author acknowledges help in the genetics section from Dr Morton and D Schweitzer. The website "TextBook History" note that the book became a bestseller on its publication in 1939, noting it as " . an excellent layperson's primer on the state-of-the-art in human genetics and heredity, and a serious critique of the racist, nativist and even anti-homosexual sentiments common among early eugenics supporters." This is important because Scheinfeld acknowledges the importance of the study of human inheritance while disassociating himself from the views on eugenics expressed by hard-line proponents, including those who he felt misapplied the science to express support for fascist views of humanity.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition of this 1963 scientific progress conference anthology. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, with eight illustrations. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Ira Goldblatt. Uncommon in this condition. Man and His Future is an anthology derived from a 1963 London symposium sponsored by the Ciba Foundation t…hat brought together sixteen internationally recognized biologists to discuss the long-term prospects of human evolution and scientific progress. Among its most significant contributions is J. B. S. Haldaneâs essay, âBiological Possibilities for the Human Species in the Next Ten Thousand Years,â which contains what is widely regarded as the first scientific reference to the concept of human cloningâ"marking the initial use of the terms âcloneâ and âcloningâ outside of agricultural contexts. The collection also features a contribution by Julian Huxley, whose evolutionary humanism and familial connection to Brave New World underscore the intersection of science and speculative ethics.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Bound in black cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Spine is faded to sun-kissed gray. Binding good and tight. This is an ex-library copy from Fairfield University Library. There are faint handwritten white lettering on the spine, inside a rectangle that is slightly less fad…ed than the rest of the spine. Red rubberstamp on the front endpaper says Withdrawn from Fairfield Univ. Library. Title page has 1964 acquisition stamp in red; preface page has library number at bottom margin. Rear endpapers have library pocket and card on both free and attached endpapers (showing that the book was checked out 14 times between 1964 and 1973). Pages 132-135 have quite a bit of underlining. Text block crisp and square. 409 numbered pages and unnumbered final page of index. Pages clean (except the underlined essay). Title page dated 1963. Copyright page states First American Edition. It was published in England by a different publisher in the same year; it's not perfectly clear which was first (although the Ciba foundation was based in the UK, so it's likely the UK edition came out ahead of the US one). Contains the essay Biological Possibilities for the Human Species in the Next Ten Thousand Years by JBS Haldane, which is thought to be the first serious discussion of human cloning. Also contains essays by Julian Huxley and Nobel Prize winner Hermann J.Muller. The essay with all the underlining is Artur Glikson's Man's Relationship to His Environment. Scare first US edition of this important collection. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although they sometimes get right).
