First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To my dear Abdul Husain with complement [sic]. Sa'di London Oct. 1990". This is Al-Hadithi's seminal work on the songs performed by semi-nomadic Bedouins along the Euphrates from Syria to Hilla, and from Mosul to Kut; scarce in… commerce. Focusing on the stretch between Ana and Hit, Al-Hadithi presents the historical and social setting of the music, and studies selected songs collected over a 20-year period. Interestingly, Choobi songs are part of the author's own cultural background, and he produced this comprehensive work to document a tradition that is under threat due to the decline of camel caravans and the industrialization of rural areas. Large octavo. With full-page map of Iraq, and illustrations in the text of dance steps, musical scores, and instruments; text in Arabic and English. Original pictorial blue wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black, white, and blue. Spine and wrappers creased with a few marks, rubbed, creasing also to contents. A very good copy.
