    Boards. 1st edition. 1st ed., Royal octavo, original cloth boards, b&w frontis portrait plate of author, b&w plates, advertisements, pp xix, 1136. Shaken, some rubbing to cloth, pencilled inscription last endpaper and light marks outside edge of textblock, otherwise clean, good condition.(heavy, please inquire regarding postage.) "The Australian Household Guide . purported to contain everything that an Australian housewife might want to know. Profits went to charities". (Australian Dictionary of Biography.) Includes advice on running a household, diet, child care, personal appearance, and many recipes. The author, Deborah Drake-Brockman, was the daughter of Grace Vernon, née Bussell (heroine of the shipwreck in 1876 near the mouth of the Margaret River). She was later knowns as Mrs. Hackett, then Dr Buller-Murphy. An artist and mining entrepreneur she was also interested in the rare Australian mineral tantalite found in the Northern Territory and at Wodgina in Western Australia and was called 'Australia's Tantalum Queen'.

The boards have light rubbing and a few professionally repaired tears. Light tanning/spotting of the edges and a previous owners details on the front free endpaper. Otherwise the contents are fine and unmarked. This is a superior copy of this item. Scans available if required.

    8vo, HB, xxiv + 1136pp including adverts (indexed!). Good condition, given age. Lavender-coloured cloth with purple lettering and title panels. Generally worn, grubby, bumped, frayed at spine edges, upper right rear has a 1.2in spilt along spine edge- hinge still sound; cloth faded at lower left rear at upper centre front. Foxed at edges, end papers and page edges. Contents clear and bright. With plenty of recipes and helpful hints. This item is heavy and may attract additional postage. Pictures available on request.
