Formation of the Canterbury Plains with hand-coloured geological sketch map with 2 related fold-out plans,1864; Headwaters of the river Rakaia, fold-out image and 20 fine colour lithographs plus comparative diagram show…ing sections of the 5 routes from the West to East coast,1866; Report on the plains and rivers of Canterbury (by W Doyne), 1864, includes 3 folding plans; Second report upon the river Waimakariri in the lower plains, Canterbury (by W Doyne), Christchurch, 1865, fold-out plan; Report upon the practicability of constructing a road through the Otira Gorge (by Edward Dobson), 1865, 13 folding plans illustrating the suggested route, plus 29 lithographed views. This item belonged to John Davies Enys, presented from Dr Haast "John D Enys from Dr Haast". The endpaper includes Eny's signature and bookplate. An extremely rare and important item, bound in contemporary half roan and marbled boards. John Enys was a Canterbury runholder who owned Castle Hill and was most notable for pursuing an active interest in natural history and geology, accompanying his close friend Haast on some of his expeditions, and making significant collections of plants, moa fossils and other artefacts.

London, The Zoological Society of London, 1886. Three papers in one. Very large 4to (32.0 x 25.6 cm). 40 pp. [143-160; 161-169; 171-182]; five lithographed plates [28-29; 30 (larger, folded); 31-32]. Original printed wrappers. = A collection of three original papers on extinct flightless birds, written by two different authors a…nd published simultaneously and consecutively in the Society's Transactions, Volume XII(5). The first paper is by the British palaeontologist, ichthyologist and ornithologist Edward Tulley Newton (1840-1930), and deals with a British Palaeogene species; the second and third are by the German-born New Zealand palaeontologist and ornithologist Johann Franz Julius von Haast (1822-1887) and deal with Pleistocene or Holocene extinct birds from New Zealand. All three are well-illustrated. Wrappers a tiny bit abraded at spine ends; otherwise an excellent, clean copy - about the best one can get. All three papers neither in Cat. BM(NH) nor in any other major bibliography.
