Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the early 1940s, a boom in white migration to Southeast Alaska brought questions of land and resource rights to courts of law, where neither precedence nor evidence was sufficient to settle claims. In 1946, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs assigned a team of researchersanthropologist Walter Goldschmidt, lawyer Theodore Haas, and Tlingit schoolteacher and interpreter Joseph Kahklento go from village to village to interview old and young alike to discover who owned and used the lands and waters and under what rules. Their mimeographed report, The Possessory Rights of the Natives of Southeastern Alaska, established strong historical evidence to support Native land claims.Haa Aani, Our Land publishes this monumental study in book form for the first time. A reminiscence by Walter Goldschmidt and introduction by Thomas Thornton explain the genesis, context, and significance of the original report. Previously uncirculated testimony from the original 88 witnesses is included, along with a bibliography and an index of names, clans, and resources. In the early 1940s, a boom in white migration to Southeast Alaska brought questions of land and resource rights to courts of law, where neither precedence nor evidence was sufficient to settle claims. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 224 pages. Essays by leading authorities on the artist's work accompany a stunning collection of nearly two hundred photographs by modernist American photographer Charles Sheeler, offering a landmark retrospective of of the work of the influential master of twentieth-century photography. Sheeler visited Europe in 1929 and an important part of this trip was to photograph Chartres Cathedral, he called it ".one of the outstanding experiences of a lifetime". The book includes thirteen beautiful shots of the Cathedral and they look remarkably like his photos of the Ford Motor Rouge River blast furnaces and other exterior bits of the industrial plant which he took in 1927. After 1929 Sheeler concentrated on his paintings. The photos in the book for this period: 1929 to 1939, include house interiors and several for his Power series. One of these, the wheels of a Hudson steam loco was the basis of his famous super realist 1939 painting 'Rolling Power'. The images in the book are taken from Lane Collection, of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, who own the Sheeler photographic estate and the book was originally published in conjunction with exhibitions in 2003/4. The 190 photos are printed as tritones with a 250 screen. Clean, bright copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY. Record # 386987.

Book is still in publishers shrinkwrap, in fine condition. *"This monograph presents the often-overlooked photographic work of Charles Sheeler. It opens with his Cubist-inspired architectural images of the 1910s, moves on to the highly abstract nude studies and dramatic New York City views from around 1920, and culminates in the series devoted to the Ford Motor Company's River Rouge plant in 1927, a project that established modern industrial iconography. Also featured are his stunning images of the Chartres cathedral done in 1929 and images of American industry made for Fortune magazine in 1939. Freely experimenting with the possibilities of the medium, Sheeler paved the way for other innovative photographers such as Walker Evans. This volume also investigates the links between the photographer and the painter Charles Sheeler - as he employed both media in the process of visual creation."--Jacket (worldcat).
