A fascinating book comprised of 30 unpaginated leaves, including pages of text with black and white drawings; every other page is printed on heavier stock, watercolor-type paper with a colorful drawing, hand-colored, by H.M. Vickar. With a total of 17 splendid hand-colored plates including the original drawing. The title "Matrimonial Advice by H.M. Vickar" is stamped in gold on the front boards. And "For Troop A." has been added in blue ink edged in black. With a quatrain printed in gold at the bottom of the front boards. Heavy soiling and staining to the front and rear boards. Fraying to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine ends. The book has two sections: "Matrimonial Advice to the Man" and "Advice to the Woman." All pages are hinged on a linen backing strip to allow them to open to full advantage.The endpapers are printed on brocade fabric imprinted with gilded stylized leaves. A most charming book with an original colored drawing on the endpaper of an attractive blonde woman wearing a Union soldier's blue jacket and cap and striking white gauntlets. The painting is inscribed and signed to: "To Troop A. Compliments of H.M. Vickar Oct. 20/91" in flowing black ink. "I should advise a man to pause/ Before he takes a wife/ In fact I see no earthly cause/ He should not pause for life. (Stamped in gold on the front boards). …

A handsome copy of the 1891 1st edition of this ribald, cautionary guide to marriage, both written and wonderfully illustrated thruout in rich chromolithography by H.M. Vickar. Tight, solid and VG+ in its vellum-backed decorative cloth, with bright gilt-titling to the front panel. Very light soiling to the panels, just a touch of mild offsetting at the front inner hinge. The plates are uniformly crisp and near-pristine or better. Quarto, separated into 2 halves ("Advice to the Man"/"Advice to the Woman").
