Cream paper boards bordered in reddish-brown, matching spine cloth, and with b/w photopictorial onlay (The Dohertys - from the first edition frontispiece) on front cover, now evenly dusty overall; very minor rubbing to lower edge of boards. Edges and text block foxed; contents otherwise clean and tight. In our experience the second edition is scarcer than the first. A near fine copy.

Laurie Doherty (1875-1919) won the Wimbledon singles title five times in a row and the doubles seven times, with his brother, Reggie. In 1903 he won the US Open, thus became the first tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament outside of his native country. Reggie Doherty (1872-1910) won the Wimbledon singles title four times at the end of the 19th century and the doubles on eight occasions. This book contains some very rare images of early American players, including the team that played against England in 1900 (Ward, Whitman and Davis) and Larned. First UK Edition.
