(MACAULAY 1790: 32)Eighteenth Century England was a time in which women had little to say in society. They did not have the right to vote, they were not allowed to own properties, when married and as the husband was the chief breadwinner, they were not supposed to work. As they could not leave the house alone without being considered a prostitute, they were confined to the home where they would have to take care of the children and the household, 'a subordinate role [.] in society' (AUGUSTIN 2005: 2). As a consequence, as girls did not need to go to school to learn their future tasks as housewives, they were educated at home by their mothers who acted as a role model.The entire eighteenth and well into the nineteenth century there was little change in how girls and women were educated. The old system of patriarchy was still well established but it began to crumble little by little. Women began to fight for their rights getting more and more supporters.This work is trying to shed light on this period's progression from girls being educated poorly to girls having the same education as their brothers. The fist chapter is going to show how gender differences were tried to be justified from a psyco-medical point of view, transferring the scientific findings to women's roles in society.The second chapter will show how important women were beginning to challenge the old system, disproving the validity of the scientific findings. Here a subdivision between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century is necessary to properly cover a timespan of roughly 150 years. The Bluestocking Circle as one of the first organizations of women will be shown as the point of departure for women's disapproval of the old system. In this context Mary Wollstonecraft as the leading character of the eighteenth century is going to be the center of attention as well as other important writers such as Catherine Macaulay Graham, Emily Davies and Elizabeth Wolstenholme-Elmy. Of course there were many more women who would need to be mentioned, but due to limited space of this work, cannot be analyzed.Having shown progressive views on how the education of girls should be adapted, the last chapter is going to give some insights on what schooling .…

This 'consumer society . did not respect inherited values or the social status quo' (Parrish x), quite to the distress of some Southern intellectuals who were 'opposed to industrialism, and wanting a much simpler economy to live by ('Introduction: A Statement of Principles' xliii). These intellectuals were the Southern Agrarians, a group of twelve writers, all of whom were 'well acquainted with one another' (xli), and connected to Vanderbilt University. In their manifesto I'll Take My Stand published in 1930 they argued against industrialism and for a regress to a more conservative life, a life Southerners had lived not that long ago.Although they published their book at the onset of the Great Depression, the roots of their movement have to be located some years earlier, as the present paper will suggest. After a brief overview of the of the Southern Renascence, the 'attempt to come to terms not only with the inherited values of the Southern tradition but also a certain way of perceiving and dealing with the past' (King 7), the beginnings of this literary movement will be analyzed. In this regard, special attention is paid to Henry Louis Mencken, a journalist who, with his outspoken critique of the Southern Way of Life, triggered literary responses from the above-mentioned group.It will further be argued, that the Southern Agrarians have their origins in the Fugitives, a group of sixteen poets who started meeting in 1915 to discuss their literary work among each other. While four of their members would also be part of the Agrarians, it will be shown that there are significant differences between the two groups.A discussion of I'll Take My Stand constitutes the second part of this essay. After having a look at the writers' statement of principles, three specific qualities of their work will be analyzed, with the third giving an impetus for a rather controversial analysis of the Agrarians' standpoint.Finally, the last part of this work will treat once again Mencken as the first and foremost critic of the Agrarians. In this final part, not only his review of the book will be looked at, but also an essay published five years after the manifesto.…

This discrimination had its roots in an obsolete worldview Americans had taken over from the late 19th century and according to which the Negro evolution had never passed the stage of savagery.To counteract this inflammatory discrimination Negro leaders like W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington rose and gave proposals about the right program for Negro education. Although they differed considerably in their views, they aimed for the same goal; the advancement of the Negro race. Apparently, white leaders such as Thomas Jesse Jones, justifying their stance with scientific proof, constantly opposed them.In juxtaposing the different views this work is trying to shed light on the Negro's struggle for education in early 20th century America. For this purpose a revision of contemporary literature, surveys, statistics and legal documents was of chief importance. The first part thus gives a preliminary account of the progressive debate that took place in the first years of the 20th century. Since whites based their discriminative attitude on evolutionary theory, a short summary of Lewis Henry Morgan's Ancient Society is given, and it is shown to which extend it influenced contemporary thinking.The next part compares Thomas Jesse Jones' recommendations on Negro education, derived from an extensive study he conducted, with W.E.B. Du Bois' and Booker T. Washington's views on that matter.The second part of this work starts out to give legal documentation on segregation in Americas' schools that lead to extensive changes of the countries demography. At this point, the North with New York as the most progressive state is characterized as well as the more conservative South, where Cumming vs. Richmond Board of Education had a more negative impact on Negro education.The final part constitutes an overview of the actual achievements that Negroes made in their struggle for education. En un siguiente paso comparamos las actitudes de dos grupos de migrantes provincianos quienes se fueron a Lima para mejorar su estatus socioeconómico. Im Rahmen einer Querschnittsuntersuchung wurden 845 Schülerinnen und Schüler der achten Klassen in Sachsen-Anhalt befragt. Zunächst wird im Text das Konstrukt Wohlbefinden erläutert und sein Bezug zur Schule hergestellt. Danach werden die vier Dimensionen des Classroom-Managements betrachtet. Dabei wurde ein sehr signifikanter Zusammenhang zwischen der wahrgenommenen Zuwendung und dem schulischen Selbstwert sowie zwischen der Unterrichtsqualität und der Einstellung zur Schule gefunden. Des weiteren wurde ein hoch signifikanter Unterschied in der Wahrnehmung des Lehrereingreifens zwischen Mädchen und Jungen festgestellt. Jahrhundert ist die Hauptstadt Perus zu einer der größten Metropolen Lateinamerikas angewachsen. Durch einen proceso que envuelve, en gran medida, a mundos culturales distintos [, se enlazó] un universo rural [ ] con un mundo urbano (Caravedo 1990: 18). Im Zuge dessen hat sich in Lima ein heterogenes Stadtbild herausgebildet, dessen kulturelle und sprachliche Divergenz im Interesse zahlreicher Studien stehen und auch Teil dieser Arbeit sein sollen. Wie wir im Folgenden sehen werden, geht diese diversificación cultural [einher mit einem] contacto y [.] conflicto de lenguas diversas, tipológicamente muy distintas, como lo son el español y el quechua (ebd. 18). Neuere Studien, wie u.a. Godenzzi (2008), beschäftigen sich in diesem Zusammenhang mit den sozio-linguistischen Auswirkungen dieses Sprachkontaktes in den verschiedenen sozialen Schichten Limas und zeigen, dass sich Sprache hier zum Identifikations- und Distinktionsmerkmal entwickelt hat. Women began to fight for their rights getting more and more supporters.This work is trying to shed light on this period's progression from girls being educated poorly to girls having the same education as their brothers. The fist chapter is going to show how gender differences were tried to be justified from a psyco-medical point of view, transferring the scientific findings to women's roles in society.The second chapter will show how important women were beginning to challenge the old system, disproving the validity of the scientific findings. Here a subdivision between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century is necessary to properly cover a timespan of roughly 150 years. The Bluestocking Circle as one of the first organizations of women will be shown as the point of departure for women's disapproval of the old system. In this context Mary Wollstonecraft as the leading character of the eighteenth century is going to be the center of attention as well as other important writers such as Catherine Macaulay Graham, Emily Davies and Elizabeth Wolstenholme-Elmy. These intellectuals were the Southern Agrarians, a group of twelve writers, all of whom were 'well acquainted with one another' (xli), and connected to Vanderbilt University. In their manifesto I'll Take My Stand published in 1930 they argued against industrialism and for a regress to a more conservative life, a life Southerners had lived not that long ago.Although they published their book at the onset of the Great Depression, the roots of their movement have to be located some years earlier, as the present paper will suggest. After a brief overview of the of the Southern Renascence, the 'attempt to come to terms not only with the inherited values of the Southern tradition but also a certain way of perceiving and dealing with the past' (King 7), the beginnings of this literary movement will be analyzed. In this regard, special attention is paid to Henry Louis Mencken, a journalist who, with his outspoken critique of the Southern Way of Life, triggered literary responses from the above-mentioned group.It will further be argued, that the Southern Agrarians have their origins in the Fugitives, a group of sixteen poets who started meeting in 1915 to discuss their literary work among each other. While four of their members would also be part of the Agrarians, it will be shown that there are significant differences between the two groups.A discussion of I'll Take My Stand constitutes the second part of this essay. After having a look at the writers' statement of principles, three specific qualities of their work will be analyzed, with the third giving an impetus for a rather controversial analysis of the Agrarians' standpoint.Finally, the last part of this work will treat once again Mencken as the first and foremost critic of the Agrarians. Since whites based their discriminative attitude on evolutionary theory, a short summary of Lewis Henry Morgan's Ancient Society is given, and it is shown to which extend it influenced contemporary thinking.The next part compares Thomas Jesse Jones' recommendations on Negro education, derived from an extensive study he conducted, with W.E.B. Du Bois' and Booker T. Washington's views on that matter.The second part of this work starts out to give legal documentation on segregation in Americas' schools that lead to extensive changes of the countries demography.
