This excellent historical novel examines da Vinci from the perspective of Giovanni Beltraffio (aka Boltraffio), then a naive apprentice in da Vinci's workshop, who reflects on the seeming clash of Christianity with the newly revived interest in Greek and Roman art and history that is the Renaissance. This historical novel eventually became the first volume in the author's Christ and Antichrist Trilogy, a study in the tensions of Christianity and Paganism. Julian, Roman Emperor from 361 - 363 and the nephew of Constantine the Great, who had adopted Christianity for the Roman Empire, attempted to restore the cult of the Roman Gods.
