Paperback. Condition: Good. The Marx Bros Scrapbook (1976) ? Groucho Marx & Richard J. Anobile Star Books ? ISBN: 0352398027 Condition: Good Anarchically supplied by: Crappy Old Books If you?ve ever thought, ?I love the Marx Brothers, but what I really need is more chaos in book form,? then The Marx Bros Scrapbook is exactly the overstuffed, slightly unhinged volume you were looking for. Part oral history, part fan shrine, part ?Did they really say that??, this is the Marx universe as filtered through Groucho?s memory, Anobile?s enthusiasm, and the collective inability of anyone involved to take things entirely seriously. Inside, you get that peculiar magic: Groucho talking at length?sometimes wise, sometimes weary, sometimes plainly malicious for fun. Anecdotes, recollections, and remarks that wander between hilarious, sharp, and mildly alarming. A grab-bag of photos, snippets, quotes, and bits of memorabilia that feel like a fan?s scrapbook exploded in your lap. The Marx Brothers mythos in its full, contradictory glory: genius, pettiness, showbiz, and jokes that still land harder than they have any right to. This is not a tidy, authorised, corporate-approved coffee-table tribute. This is more like being locked in a slightly smoky room with Groucho and a tape recorder while Anobile frantically tries to keep up. There are stories. There are opinions. There are lines that make you laugh out loud and others that make you think, ?Ah. Different times. Different? everything.? As for this particular copy , as honestly appraised by Crappy Old Books : Condition: Good ? which means the book is perfectly readable and structurally sound, but clearly not fresh from the warehouse. This is a properly lived-in paperback (or slightly softened softcover) that has survived the 1970s, previous owners, and at least one shelf clear-out. The cover may show: Light creasing along the spine from prior readings by people trying not to drop the book while laughing. Mild edge wear and the odd scuff, the sort of thing acquired while migrating between student flats, bedsides, and ?to read? piles. The pages are likely nicely aged to that warm, off-white tone that says ?I was born when everyone still used landlines.? All text and images remain clear, even if your own memory isn?t. You may also find: A previous owner?s name on the inside cover, perhaps written in hopeful block capitals. The faint aroma of ?70s paperback? and nostalgia. A dog-eared page or two marking someone?s favourite joke, insult, or deeply questionable remark from Groucho. What you should not expect: A glossy, reverential, museum-ready tribute. This thing is closer to fan zine meets confessional ramble. Soft-focus sentimentality. Groucho?s idea of ?warm remembrance? usually involves a joke with teeth. Neat historical packaging. The Marx Brothers? story arrives here in fragments, contradictions, and one-liners, like a film reel that insists on jumping out of the projector. This book is ideal if you are: A Marx Brothers devotee who wants to hear Groucho?s voice in all its messy, sardonic, occasionally barbed brilliance. A comedy nerd interested in how the legends themselves remembered (or misremembered) their heyday. The sort of person who appreciates that a ?scrapbook? is, by definition, not curated serenity but glorious clutter. Someone who likes their pop culture history a little unruly, a little uncomfortable, and very, very quotable. The Marx Bros Scrapbook captures that strange late-period Groucho zone: part grand old man of comedy, part grumpy uncle, part living legend who absolutely does not intend to behave like a statue. It?s messy, fascinating, funny, and a little bit jagged round the edges?rather like the Brothers themselves. This Good condition copy wears its age and its fandom lightly: not pristine, not trashed, just nicely used?like a well-loved joke that somehow still works. A slightly scuffed, thoroughly entertaining plunge into Marxian mayhem, preserved between gently worn covers and dispatched to you with a raised eyebrow and a cigar-free wink by Crappy Old Books .
