Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. 4th Edition. In Hebrew. (8), 234, 24 pages. Pages yellowed and fragile. First two leaves detached. 24 x 16.5 cm. Ex library. Isaac Hirsch Weiss' Dor Dor we-Dorshaw, in five volumes, was first published in Vienna (between 1871-1891) where Weiss spent most of his life. A Yiddish edition was printed in Vilna 1904-1910. This is Weiss' largest and most important work, and it secured his reputation as a prominent 19th century scholar of Talmudic and rabbinic literature. The work is a history of the Halakha, or oral law, from Biblical times until after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. He deals not only with the sequence of the halakhah, but also with the development of the aggadah, with the history of talmudic and rabbinic literature and with the character traits of important sages. Most Talmud scholars immediately adopted the work as their standard history. While Weiss rejected biblical criticism and believed that the Pentateuch was a unified work dating from the time of Moses, he did see it as largely a product of human design and subject to historical analysis. He therefore came under criticism from many orthodox traditionalists. The entire set (not here) is: Helek 1. Mi-kadmatah 'ad hurban ha-Bayit ha-sheni. helek 2. Me-hurban ha-Bayit ha-sheni 'ad ahar hatimat ha-Mishnah. helek 3. Me-hatimat ha-Mishnah 'ad she-nistayemha-Talmud. helek 4.
