Spine, upper cover and half-title: Friedrich Wasmann, 1805-1886. Autobiography of the noted German academic artist, noted for his portraiture, with a short introduction by…the editor. One of 500 numbered copies printed (the entire edition). See Freitag #10120 (citing the Insel-Verlag edition of 1915). Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by editor Gronvold to Madame Elisabeth Wasmann (the artist's widow) in black ink, in German, at head of half-title page. Uncredited holograph English translation of the editor's introduction also present (1 small 8vo ruled sheet, recto and verso). Bound in full dark brown morocco, gilt-stamped spine and upper cover, spine with raised bands, covers ruled blind, green/brown floral patterned endpapers, foredges and lower edges untrimmed, dark red silk bookmarker. A very good- copy with slight wear and rubbing to spine (chiefly at head and foot); upper cover detaching at spine edge; some rubbing to extremities (chiefly corners and edges); ex-library label on front attached endpaper, with few pencilled ex-library marks elsewhere; slight starting to few signatures; slight internal browning to edges and endpapers; else a highly desirable presentation copy of a limited edition monograph.14 b/w Illustrations / Plates; Few b/w Vignettes (tailpieces).
