First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Oversized & heavy hardcover, Vol. 1, xvi + 341pp, glossy paper, numerous (mostly colour) illustrations in text: maps, plans, photos and aerial views, drawings, NOT ex-library. A clean and bright copy with unmarked text and firm binding, free of inscriptions and stamps. In a very good dust jacket (untorn, moderately shelfworn, with gentle creases along the edges). -- The transition from the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age has been the most persistent enigma in Irish archaeology. Despite a considerable wealth of artefactual evidence for this period, and a number of scholarly studies devoted to it in recent years, the social, economic and belief systems within which it was produced and utilised have remained poorly understood. The North Munster Project was established in 1992 with the purpose of examining and interpreting the late Bronze Age and Iron Age (later prehistoric) archaeology of the area of the lower River Shannon using an integrated regional strategy, including excavation, field survey, palaeobotanical research and artefact studies. As the strategy developed it was decided to provide a particular, detailed assessment of significant areas (landblocks) within the region, including the area around the hillfort at Mooghaun South in southeast Clare. This volume presents the results of four elements of the Project's research: (1) the assessment of the later prehistory of the Mooghaun landblock; (2) the excavation report for Mooghaun South; (3) the excavation report for Clenagh; (4) the palynological study of Mooghaun Lough. The basic view of prehistory taken by the Project was that the archaeological evidence represents human behaviour and, as such, was part of a real historical narrative. A principal line of enquiry, therefore, sought to decipher the evidence in order to reconstruct a model of that narrative. In this we have attempted to maximise the information and move towards a holistic interpretation. The theoretical framework for this was 'landscape archaeology', which views the past at a number of interlocking and interrelated levels. These include social, spatial, funerary and ritual, economic and historical layers - in effect the perceptive landscapes of prehistoric peoples.
