Jan Grmela (1895-1957) was a librarian, translator, radio playwright, and editor. Fire At the Opera is a staged drama that led listeners to believe it was a real tragic event. This prec…eded Orson Wells' War of the Worlds broadcast by 8 years, and it is Grmela's most noted play. It was believable because fire outbreaks in large theaters were not unusual at the time. It is staged to occur during the aria of the Duke of Rigoletto (La donna mobile), and was apparently quite effective. It was later recorded on gramaphone records. Grmela is also recognized for his archival work on historical Prague. Karel Svolinsky typography and book design. OCLC locates two holdings in North America (Boston PL, Princeton). This copy fine, partially uncut, in the original onion skin wrapper.
